| Q. |
Is
previous ballooning experience necessary? |
| A. |
None
at all, everyone is welcome. |
| |
|
| Q. |
When
do we fly? |
| A. |
Shortly
after dawn and a few hours before sunset, when the
winds are generally lighter and the air conditions
stable. |
| |
|
| Q. |
How
long does the flight last? |
| A. |
Approximately
one hour. However, the whole process, including
preparation of the balloon, flight, champagne at
landing site and return to start point, by Land
Rover, takes in the order of three hours. |
| |
|
| Q. |
How
fast do we fly? |
| A. |
We
travel at the same speed as the wind. The maximum
forecast wind speed we fly in is 15 mph at 2000
feet. |
| |
|
| Q. |
Where
do we land? |
| A. |
There
is no mechanical means of steering a balloon, we
fly with the wind. The pilot uses the fact that
the wind direction and speed vary with height to
alter the direction of flight. We generally land
in open countryside, close to a road. |
| |
|
| Q. |
How
high do we fly? |
| A. |
We
vary the height throughout the flight. During part
of the flight we will be at tree top level at others
we may climb to 3,000 or 5,000 feet. Each flight
pattern is different as the pilot reads the winds
in order to give the passengers the maximum experience.
|
| |
|
| Q. |
How
often do we fly? |
| A. |
We
aim to fly twice a day, every day during the summer
season (April-October). During the winter months
we fly primarily at weekends. |
| |
|
| Q. |
What
time of year is best? |
| A. |
Impossible
to say. Crisp, clear winter mornings are as wonderful
as balmy summer evenings, although very different
experiences. |
| |
|
| Q. |
What
happens if the flight is postponed due to adverse
weather? |
| A. |
We
arrange another date to suit you. |
| |
|
| Q. |
How
safe is ballooning? |
| A. |
Of
all types of air transport, balloon travel has by
far the best safety record. Our balloons are inspected
annually by a Civil Aviation Authority appointed
inspector, and issued with a certificate of airworthiness.
We consider our equipment to be the best that money
can buy. |
| |
|
| Q. |
What
should we wear? |
| A. |
The
temperature during the flight will be similar to
that on the ground. Loose clothing, suitable for
outdoor activities, is preferable and strong shoes
or boots are essential. A cap or hat to protect
from the heat of the burners may be useful. |
| |
|
| Q. |
Are
there any age restrictions? |
| A. |
There
are no upper age restrictions. We regularly fly
passengers in their 80's and 90's. We
do not fly children under the age of 8. Children
under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible
adult.
|
| |
|
| Q. |
Are
there any specific fitness requirements? |
| A. |
If
you are of average fitness you will have no problems
with ballooning. You should avoid flying if you
have a serious medical condition or have recently
undergone surgery. You must not fly if you are pregnant. |
| |
|
| Q. |
What
do our friends and family do while we are flying? |
| A. |
We
usually operate from sites adjoining hotels which
can provide services to your non flying friends.
Alternatively they can follow the recovery vehicle
by road and witness you landing. |
| |
|
| Q. |
Can
I bring a camera on the flight? |
| A. |
Balloons
provide some wonderful photographic opportunities.
Cameras and lightweight video systems are welcome.
Ensure you bring plenty of film. |
